Welcome to Year 3
Who are we?
We are 7 and 8 year old pupils and the first class in Key Stage 2. Throughout Year 3, we begin to take greater responsibility for our learning and ourselves. We are encouraged to develop our thinking and investigative skills to help us to learn and discover things on our own.
What do we do?
In Year 3, we work with greater independence and increasing confidence. We are also expected to share our thoughts and ideas and to take responsibility for others.

Reading:
"Reading for pleasure early in childhood is linked to better cognitive performance and mental wellbeing in adolescence"
Throughout school the expectation is that every child reads aloud at home a minimum of 4 times a week and this is recorded in the home/school reading records (in Year 3 this can be recorded by your child). The reading records are checked daily and the class record of home reading updated.
When you listen to your child read please talk to them about what they have read - can they tell you what has happened or predict what might come next? This will help their comprehension skills.
Your child is encouraged to independently change their reading book when it is finished - this might be every day or once a week depending on the length of the book!
Library: Library books will be issued during the first week of term. The children are asked to share these at home with you and their wider family before returning them. Once their library book is returned a new one can be selected. Year 3 usually visit the school library every Friday.
Homework:
In addition to the weekly spellings, reading and maths (Numbots / TTRS).
Every half term, there is a new homework project linked to their learning. They will present this learning in class to their peers.

Maths
In Year 3 we begin the autumn term with place value, then move on to addition and subtraction before finishing with multiplication. We talk about hundreds, tens and ones - the value of different numbers. Our other focus is times tables – regular TTRS homework will make a huge difference.
P.E.
Our P.E. days this half term are Monday and Wednesday.
Please remember to come to school wearing your P.E. kit (black joggers or shorts, white t-shirt, black hoodie and trainers ... don't forget to remove ALL jewellery!
