Maths

At King Edwin Primary School we follow the statutory guidance from the National Primary Curriculum for Mathematics.

We know Maths is an essential skill that supports everyday life and therefore we are passionate about all our pupils achieving their best. The teaching of Maths ensures that:

  • Children are fluent in the fundamentals of counting, recalling number bonds, fact families and times tables.

  • Children can reason mathematically using mathematical vocabulary.

  • Children can solve problems by applying what they know.

  • Children see the value and purpose of mathematics in their everyday lives.

We also ensure children have opportunities to apply their mathematical knowledge in Science and other subjects.

The National Curriculum for Mathematics can be found here

White Rose Maths

To support our teaching of Maths, we use the White Rose programme of learning. The programme covers all aspects of the National Curriculum and is taught in individual blocks of learning about a particular topic e.g. addition, fractions, geometry etc.

There are a number of resources that can be accessed at home, including the 1-Minute Maths app, which help to improve children's confidence and fluency with numbers.

See the link below for further information about the programme or speak to your child's teacher for any help with Maths.

Times Tables

Children start to learn basic times tables from Year 1 upwards and we use the Times Tables Rockstars (TTRS) programme to support this. Children practise the different games to improve their recall and fluency with multiplication and division facts.
In Year 4, children take a statutory Multiplication Check and the use of Times Tables Rockstars helps to prepare them for this.
