MFL - French

At King Edwin Primary we follow the National Curriculum for Modern Foreign Languages (MFL). Our chosen language is French.

The teaching of French:

  • Develops a love of language learning and enables children to see the benefits of being able to speak a different language.

  • Encourages an understanding and appreciation of French culture.

  • Provides children with a wide vocabulary, which enables them to understand and respond to spoken and written language from a variety of authentic sources.

  • Encourages children to speak with increasing confidence, fluency and spontaneity, finding ways of communicating what they want to say, including through discussion and asking questions, and continually improving the accuracy of their pronunciation and intonation.

  • Provides opportunities for children to write at varying length, for different purposes and audiences, using the variety of grammatical structures that they have learnt.

Language Angels

We use the Language Angels programme of learning to teach French.
Children cover a wide range of topics including, presenting themselves, families, animals, musical instruments and ordering food and drink. Each unit starts by focusing on listening and oral skills, allowing children lots of time to practise hearing and saying new vocabulary. They will then learn to read and write in French, including opportunities to translate both from and to French.
There are a range of activities and games which can be accessed for children to practise what they have been learning in school.

Further information and access to allocated games and activities can be found using the following link:
