Operation Encompass

What is Operation Encompass?

Operation Encompass is a national safeguarding initiative that helps schools support children who have experienced or witnessed domestic abuse.

Domestic abuse can have a significant impact on a child's emotional wellbeing, behaviour and ability to learn. Children may arrive at school feeling upset, anxious or unsettled following an incident at home.

How does Operation Encompass work?

Operation Encompass enables the police to share information about domestic abuse incidents with a child's school, so that support can be provided as early as possible.

A trained member of the school's safeguarding team, known as a Key Adult, receives this information securely and works with relevant staff to ensure the child receives appropriate support. Information is handled sensitively and confidentially, with the child's safety and wellbeing at the centre of all decisions.

Why is it important?

By working together, the police and schools can help ensure that children affected by domestic abuse are recognised, supported and able to access the help they need. This early support can make a positive difference to their wellbeing, sense of safety and readiness to learn.
